Magugu & Le Motel
Bitter Better - EP
There is an immediate honesty in records that refuse polish. Right from the opening bars, Bitter Better doesn't try to impress through sheer volume or sensory overload, but through the negative space left between each hit.
On paper, this pairing could read like a brief club experiment, but it has felt completely inevitable since their 2023 debut, Kindness Weakness. On one side stands Magugu, the Nigerian-born, UK-based MC whose gravelly pidgin delivery cuts clean through any sound system. On the other is Le Motel, the Brussels producer and Maloca imprint founder with a penchant for field recordings, tactile percussions, and deep low-end architecture.
What stands out across the EP is the sheer restraint of the production. Le Motel never clutters the room: the subs are carved out with surgical precision, while wood and metal clicks land bone-dry, free of flattering reverb. In that stripped-back arena, Magugu’s voice acts as an extra percussion track rather than a vocal overlay. His tone is heavy, his cadences bounce off the pocket, and the tension never dissipates, even when the tempo eases back.

On "Bad From Day," the mood locks in instantly: a crawling bassline, nervous drum hits, and a measured delivery that feels like a quiet warning. The title track, "Bitter Better," leans into a hypnotic, almost ritualistic loop, where vocal repetition replaces the need for an overt pop hook. Further down, "Believe" caps off the record with a syncopated bounce, nodding to UK sound system roots as much as West African polyrhythms.
