Building a mythology from scratch to score a film is a delicate gamble. To reflect the rise and fall of a nightlife spot in Felix Van Groeningen's Belgica, David and Stephen Dewaele chose not to license existing records. Instead, they wrote, recorded, and produced sixteen tracks attributed to sixteen fictional bands, all manufactured inside their Deewee studio in Ghent. The project had every reason to feel like a cold exercise in style. Soulwax avoided the trap by breathing physical grain into every recording. From raw punk and Italo-disco to Turkish psychedelia, each alter ego possesses its own room acoustics, texture, and stage presence. The soundtrack does not play like a technical showcase, but like the sonic logbook of an endless night.
